Practical Landscaping Ideas For New Homeowners
August 19, 2008
When you move into a new home, you want a lawn that is as beautiful as your new home. Every homeowner has a different idea of what makes up a beautiful lawn. It is important for a new homeowner to work with their landscaper to help create the most practical landscape for their purposes. What would work for one family could be simply disastrous for another. A lawn is a serious commitment and your lawn needs to be tended to at least several times a week if not every day most of the time.
To achieve a beautiful lawn, a new homeowner should consider exactly what landscaping has appealed to them. Perhaps they have seen landscaping in their neighbors’ yards that they like a great deal. Alternatively, something from the home they used to live in appeals to them. Brainstorm and make a list of these ideal suggestions to bring to your landscaper. While not every suggestion may be practical, having this list can be a great starting point. Your landscaper can make suggestions as they realize that you like box trimmed hedges or that you want fully-grown maple trees. The landscapers want you to be happy with the lawn that you create.
The first decision to make is about the maintenance of your lawn. Some families decide to do their own yard work and others choose to have a landscaping crew do their maintenance. Sometimes this all comes down to a time issue: with many dual-career couples, there can often be little time to do yard chores. Alternatively, sometimes yard chores can be difficult for a couple to do. When one of the family members suffers from hay fever or pollen allergies, it can make great sense to hire a landscaping crew to do your yard chores for you on a weekly basis. Having this dependable crew working for you means that your lawn, trees, bushes and flowers will be taken care of in every season. That your leaves will be raked in the fall and that the snow will be shoveled in the wintertime.
Creating a beautiful landscape for the new homeowner takes input from every family member. Your landscape designer will need to know exactly what you intend to use your lawn for. Some families do a lot of socializing or entertaining on their lawn. These families would want an area for a barbecue or grill and a patio table with chairs. Some families might even want a hot tub or a pool installed. Each of these decisions would affect your landscaping. Families with young children might desire playground equipment like swing sets, sandboxes and slides. These are popular items for children under twelve and can make play dates at home even more fun. A landscape designer can create a lawn that can suit each member of your family with ease.
Another factor to consider when creating a landscape for a new homeowner is the family budget. Some families have a “the sky is the limit” type of budget. Other families will have an exact dollar amount. Other families may have a more open mind about their budget. Each of these families can achieve a beautiful lawn, but certain decisions will need to be made. Some types of grass, plants and flowers can be more expensive than others. Some plants and foliage also need more maintenance than others, and each of these choices will need to be considered when keeping a family’s budget well in mind.
Timing is also a key factor for any landscaping ideas. Some families are more patient about having their lawn being created over time. They don’t mind watching tiny trees grow up into mighty oaks (or maples) over time, just as their children grow into teens. However, some families prefer to have plants, trees and foliage that is more mature. They want a lawn that does not look as if it was just planted. Every customer can be accommodated, it is simply best to understand their needs before pressing forward with an idea. Knowing your customer’s preference about timing, and when they would like their lawn to appear completed is important for this project.
A home’s landscaping very much becomes a big part of the home itself. The tree that stands so close to the doorway welcomes visitors that enter the door. The flowering bushes are a way that makes your home stand out from the others on the block. With some planning and thinking, your home can have beautiful landscaping!

Lawn Mower Sharpening and Repair - What You Need to Know
August 18, 2008
Maintaining a thriving green garden needs proper care and the right equipment on hand. Having the right lawn mower for your landscape’s glory that will cut the grass and not actually rip them up is a must have. If you wish to buy one, the primary thing that you need to consider is your landscape. Do you have a flat lawn or do you own the slope type? In case the work calls for cutting grasses on a slope then you could go with the one that contains high wheels so you won’t find it hard to push it into the hill. On the other hand, if you wish to get rid of the messy job then the cordless or the electric munching lawn mower is the thing for you. After purchasing, review the maintenance schedule and ensure that you are aware of the guidelines when it comes to lawn mower sharpening and repair.
A good kind will allow your equipment to last for more than a year while at the same time giving your grass a better cut. When spring time comes, all of the parts must be properly cleaned and maintained. Even the spark plug should be replaced from time to time as to achieve good firing. Ensure the condition of every nuts and bolts and see to it the proper tightness is achieved. In addition, the underside deck calls for proper cleaning all throughout the season in order to get rid of unnecessary dirt and grass; doing this is a great advantage for grasses since it hinders the spread of diseases among them. For you to successfully clean the deck, ensure first that the spark plug is not connected and empty the gas tank first. After then, you can now start to stand the mower in an upward position and spray the equipment with water. Scrub the rest of the grimes then you’re done. In addition, lawn mower repair also calls for checking the air filter and the oil. The later must be cleaned and replaced when needed and you should oil the equipment from time to time.
When it comes to lawn mower sharpening, the process should be done after 1 or 2 months varying upon how often you use it. Dong this will benefit you of having nicely cut grasses instead of ripping them up. When sharpening, simply detach the blade and sharpen it with the use of a file. Be extra careful with the blade as to not cut your fingers, don’t allow your kid to do this and never even attempt to do it right in front of them so they would not emulate you later on. You know how harmful it s too play with sharp objects.
When the mowing season is over, it is about time that you gear yourself with the proper step of correctly storing the machine until winter time. It is highly recommended to remove the gas and the oil before storing. If each owner would only do the proper care for the mower then they will be ensured of great seasons and years of service.

What You Need to Know About Roses
August 18, 2008
Roses are one of the most beautiful flowers in the garden. They can also be one of the most difficult to grow. Caring for roses may take some time, but the rewards are worth it. There are many, many different types of Roses. Tea, Grandiflora, Floribunda, Old English, Ramblers, Climbers, Miniature, etc. Many of the newer hybrid varieties will bloom off and on throughout the growing season, while others have one spectacular show, with intermittent flowers later on. The “Knock Out” variety rose is a vigorous grower with fantastic flowers all season.
Roses have very particular needs. Roses need a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight per day. They also like light, well drained soil. The soil around their roots should be kept loose by cultivating often. This brings necessary oxygen to the roots of the plants. They also like to be fed a good organic fertilizer regularly and mulched around the base of the plant to help keep the roots cool in the heat of summer and warm in winter.
Roses also need regular care to keep insects and disease at bay. An insecticidal soap spray will keep away Aphids and Whiteflies. An organic fungicide spray will keep away Black spot, a disease very common to roses. Watering the soil around the Rose rather than the foliage is also a good prevention against Black Spot. If you have an irrigation system try to keep the Roses away from the direct spray, as Roses do not like wet leaves and will also not flower as well. If you keep a scheduled maintenance for insect and disease prevention, the care becomes very easy. If one waits until there is an infestation of one sort or another, it is much more difficult to eradicate the problem. The old adage “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” definitely applies.
When pruning your Roses, or simply clipping some for a vase, be sure to use good sharp pruning shears. Dull shears can tear the stems, leaving ugly dark marks. It also leaves a larger open wound for disease and insects to feast on. It can even inhibit new growth. When pruning a Rose, prune just above a leaf node. This will encourage the plant to grow bushy and thick. Leaving long stems will make the plant lanky. It is also important to prune out any old dead canes. Depending on the type of Rose, how they are pruned and cut back for the winter will vary. Check the instructions that come with the plant.
Roses look beautiful in both Formal and Informal gardens. They coincide well with perennials such as Lavender and Black Eyed Susan, they mix well in the Herb garden as well as an accent to Evergreens. A Rose Tree will make an outstanding centerpiece in any garden or as a focal point at an entry.
Roses have been revered by many generations of gardeners and non-gardeners alike. The beauty of Roses will enhance the look of your home year after year.

Lawn Maintanance
August 18, 2008
Maintaining a nice green yard can be a chore. Cutting, fertilizing, weed, insect and disease control, where does it end?
Maintaining your yard can be simple… Go Organic!
The use of organic products on the lawn takes all the guess work out. By using natural products that come from the earth, you don’t need a chemistry degree. One does not need to worry about applying too much and burning the turf. Organic fertilizers are naturally balanced, easily absorbed and leave no residual chemicals that are harmful to people, pets, water or wildlife. They also release evenly and over a period of time so less applications are needed. Organic fertilizers can be applied most anytime during the growing season, even in summer.
Compost is also another great way to keep your lawn healthy naturally. By spreading a thin layer of compost over the yard, you are putting back valuable, natural nutrients into the ground.
Using natural products on your lawn, the turf will become healthier and stronger, thereby becoming disease and insect resistant naturally. The healthier the turf the easier it is for the lawn to resist infestations. The lawn will also have less weeds. A strong thick turf will choke out weeds. If the grass is thick, the sun can’t reach the weeds seeds, and they simply don’t germinate.
Using a mulching lawn mower or a reel type mower is actually healthier for the lawn than bagging the grass. By leaving clippings (not when the grass is long) on the lawn, it acts as a natural fertilizer as the grass decomposes. The blades of the grass are the nutrient center of the grass itself. It is important not to cut more than 1/3 of the turf at a time, as this is where photosynthesis takes place and allows the turf to grow and be healthy. When too much of the blade is cut off the grass cannot grow effectively.
Turf that is strong and healthy will also be more drought resistant than weak, stressed turf.
Watering is also a key element to a strong, healthy, green lawn. It is important to know how and when to water the lawn. Watering the lawn deeply and infrequently is the best for the lawn. By watering deeply and only once or twice per week, the roots will grow deep into the soil thereby becoming more drought resistant. If you water for short periods of time 4 or 5 times per week, for example, the roots will stay at the surface of the ground, where the water is. During periods of drought and water restrictions, your lawn won’t have a fighting chance. Watering frequently also causes thatch to build up and the turf will become thin and weeds will begin to invade.
So, with that said, I’ve just cut down your lawn chores by about half. You will save money on fertilizers, control product and your water bill. By using organic products, not only are you going to have a beautiful, lush lawn naturally…you will have the time to enjoy it!

A Bird Habitat
August 17, 2008
Creating a habitat for birds can be a fun and rewarding hobby. To attract and keep birds coming to the new environment you’ve created, there are a few simple things you need to do.
Hang a variety of birdhouses for different types of birds. Many birds will come back year after year to roost in the same house. Do some research to find out what types of birds you want to attract, where and what kind of houses they like.
You will also want a variety of bird feeders and food. This is key…if you want to keep the birds around you must provide food and shelter for them year round. If you forget to feed for a while them or stop feeding them all winter, they will go elsewhere.
Birds also love a good bath and a drink. A birdbath is a great item to have in your yard for the birds. They can cool off in the summer heat, take a bath, etc. I find a shady place for a birdbath to be the best. In the summer it won’t dry out as fast or grow algae. Make sure you put fresh water in regularly to keep away mosquitoes. They also need a water source in the winter. A Bird Bath Heater is a great way to provide a water source during the frigid winter months.
Birds are super fun to watch. Each species of bird seems to have their own personality, song and dance routine. It is like a guessing game to find the bird and match it up to the song. Get a pair of binoculars and keep them handy. A close up view of the birds will give a whole new perspective of their beauty. A book about birds of your region will also help you identify new birds and learn about their habits and environmental needs.
I’m no expert on birds by any stretch of the imagination, however, I know I love to watch the pair of House Finches come back to the same bird house each season. This bird house has been hanging in the same spot on my front porch since the previous owners lived here. In the early spring they have to fight off other birds to keep their home. It is an amazing sight. My family all love to watch the birds come to the window feeder. They are so up close, it is the only time my 3 small children stay still and quiet.
Providing a good habitat for birds can also be just having good natural shelter. Trees and shrubs can provide natural shelter, shade and protection. Shrubs that have berries in the fall and winter, like Viburnum, Oregon Grape Holly, and Pyracantha provide food for the birds into the winter. Sunflowers are a great summer treat for the birds.
Be patient when creating a new habitat for the birds. It takes a little time for the birds to discover a new environment. Once they do, you will be surprised and pleased at the variety of beauty now in your yard.

Grass Cutting Green Options
August 17, 2008
Grass Cutting in many parts of the nation has become a huge business. With our hectic, over scheduled lives most of us choose to let someone else do the chore of cutting our grass.
The Landscaping industry in general is a wonderful business. They create beautiful landscapes, install tress, shrubs, plants and flowers. This enhances our environment and beautifies our homes. There are a few things about the industry that is negating all the positive work they do.
Grass cutting is a big part of the business. Everyday, 5 days a week, they drive from home to home, get on their gas guzzling mowers, start up their gas powered line trimmers and blowers. They probably spend no more than 30 minutes on average at a home. Then they are back in their vehicles and on to the next house. This is an extreme amount of gas usage from the machines and the vehicles and an extreme amount of ozone destroying pollution.
We can reduce the amount of pollution going into our atmosphere if we make the time to cut our own grass, in a non-polluting way. There are more and more rechargeable mowers and trimmers coming onto the market. Most of these rechargeable mowers will cut about 1/3 of an acre on one charge. This will accommodate many residential lawns. This however still takes energy. There is one option that takes nothing more than human energy…a rotary mower.
These mowers have come a long way in recent years. They used to be heavy, awkward and required sharpening often. The rotary mowers of today are lightweight, ergonomically designed, and the blades require little sharpening. These mowers are easy to use, less expensive than traditional gas powered mowers and lawn cutting services.
Rotary mower pricing starts around $90.00 US dollars and can go as high as $300 US dollars. On the better models bagging attachments are available. The Brill Rotary Mower is the best I’ve come across. The blades only require sharpening once every ten years or so. A bagging option is available for about $50.00 US dollars. They are lightweight and have a smooth easy cutting action, even through thick turf.
The way a rotary lawn mower cuts is also better for the turf. It cuts the turf with scissor like motion, leaving a clean cut. A gas powered mower blade spins at a high rate of speed pulling the grass up and slicing it. If the blade is not sharp, it tears the turf. You can tell if the blade is not sharp by the white edges at the top of the grass that looks like split ends. Golf Courses often use gas powered reel type mowers on the greens for that super manicured look.
Maybe we as a nation would be a little healthier too, if we cut our own grass. So many people live sedate lives now more than ever. By cutting our own lawns with environmentally friendly equipment we are not only improving our planets health, but improving our own as well.

Perennials, Repeat Pleasures
August 17, 2008
Perennials are one of my favorite types of plants to have in the garden.
Perennials are flowering plants that go dormant in the winter and return each spring. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of different types of perennials. Perennials have as many different blooming seasons, colors, textures and sizes as there are types. This is what makes perennials so fabulous. Complete gardens can be created from using strictly perennials.
By planting different types of perennials in your gardens you can have color from the first of spring until a hard frost in the fall. If you are lucky enough to live in Planting Zones 8-10 you get to have color all year long!
Some perennials are grown for their striking and beautiful foliage, others for their flower. Some perennials will only bloom once per season, but the show is spectacular! Many perennials will bloom repeatedly throughout the growing season. Dead-heading the spent flowers will encourage more to bloom. Use a good, sharp pair of pruning shears or garden scissors to remove the spent foliage.
Adding compost or organic fertilizer twice per season (spring and fall) your perennials will be lush and beautiful. After a few seasons you will be able to spread these perennials around in your own yard and share them with friends. Another added benefit of perennials, they multiply! Most perennials can be divided easily. Choose a cool day for dividing your plants and make sure the plants get plenty of water, so they will recover quickly.
Planting perennials for the best show…plant them in groups. By planting a few (or more) in the same area you will end up with waves of color in your garden. This is striking. If you would like a more informal look spread them out, so you have color here and there.
When creating a perennial garden, as is a good idea with any garden, lay out the design and place the plants before putting them in the ground. This will give you a good idea of how the garden will look when it is finished. It is easier to make changes before all the holes are dug. Check the information tags to find out the requirements of each plant. If you plant the perennials where they will be happy, the results will astound you.
I even use perennials in my planters. They make an interesting and unusual look in pots and even hanging baskets. I only use annuals as an accent tucked here or there in my planters. This is also a time saver in the spring, your pots will grow all by themselves.
You will get many compliments on your planters, because they are not the same old Impatiens or Petunias. There are many plants that are only perennial in warm climates. That’s ok! If you like it, grow it. In the fall simply pull up the plant, (many of these have bulbs or tubers) and store it in a cool dry place for the winter.
Using perennials will allow you to use your creativity and your imagination to create the garden of your dreams.

How to Grow Sunflowers: Back to Basics
August 15, 2008
It’s easy to imagine a garden that is full of tall, brightly-colored sunflowers. They’re easy to grow, simple to maintain and can add a dazzling splash of color to any landscape. However, though sunflowers are easy to grow and maintain, there are several potential pitfalls. Small critters can steal the seeds before they have a chance to sprout. High winds can decimate a sunflower garden if stakes aren’t used for structural support. Wild birds can swoop down to pillage the seeds before they can be stolen by other animals.
By taking a few preventative measures, you can help ensure that your sunflowers grow to be a vibrant, stunning component of your garden. Below, we’ll explain how to grow sunflowers and provide a few useful tips for cultivating a gorgeous end-of-summer garden.
Sow The Seeds Indoors
Most enthusiasts plant their sunflower seeds outdoors. But, doing so exposes your seeds to small animals. If left unprotected, these critters will often steal the seeds for food. You can prevent your seeds from disappearing by planting them indoors. This has the added benefit of preventing the frost outside from damaging the seeds. Plant them in peat pots using average to rich soil. Then, place the pots by the window to allow them direct access to sunlight.
You’ll notice when you plant your sunflower seeds indoors that they’ll grow quickly. You should transplant them from the peat pots into the soil outside by the time the seedlings reach 2 inches. If they grow much taller, they may not be able to stand properly when you transplant them.
Transplanting Your Seedlings
There are several factors to consider when transplanting your sunflowers to the soil outside. First, don’t be afraid to get rid of less-than-stellar seedlings. By throwing away the stragglers, you can boost the overall quality of your sunflower garden. Plus, you’ll prevent overcrowding (a common tendency amongst novice gardeners). Also, it’s important to place your seedlings in an area that receives constant sunlight. Your sunflowers can grow in low-quality soil. But, sunlight is critical.
To ensure a healthy-looking crop of sunflowers, prepare the soil prior to transplanting your seedlings. Dig a small hole a few inches wide and a few inches deep for each sunflower. Use a high-grade soil with a time-released fertilizer. This soil mixture will be more expensive than lower quality soil, but it can have a dramatic impact on the quality of your crop.
Weeding And Watering
Sunflower seedlings are extremely susceptible to drying out. They need to be watered daily from the moment they’re transplanted into your soil outside. Once they reach 1 foot in height, their stems should be sturdy. You can reduce how often you water them (every other day should be sufficient). Once your sunflowers grow to 2 feet, you can further reduce watering to every few days.
Also, keep in mind that weeds can quickly overwhelm your sunflower seedlings. Make the effort to keep the weeds at bay. Once your sunflowers are taller, the weeds won’t be able to strangle them. You should still eliminate the weeds simply because your garden will look nicer, but your sunflowers won’t be vulnerable.
Tender Loving Care
A patch of tall, vibrant sunflowers can look exhilarating. Many can grow over 12 feet. The bright yellow of the heads combined with their majestic height can add a unique blend of personality and nobility to your garden. Growing them is easy. They simply need a little attention each day. Once your sunflowers are fully grown, they won’t require as much attention and you’ll be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor. With some tender loving care in the beginning, you’ll have a garden that attracts the envy of your neighbors.
